Phoenix Metro Rail Accepts First Ads

The Metro light rail in Phoenix this week introduced the first advertising to appear on its system. To promote the National Basketball Assn.'s All-Star game on Feb. 15 at US Airways Center, the NBA wrapped two trains on the new mass transit system with images of six 2009 NBA All-Stars.

Prior to the NBA campaign, which will run through Feb.16, the Phoenix Metro—which connects Phoenix, Mesa and Tempe—had a "no advertising policy." The Metro voted to allow the NBA to wrap the trains as a pilot project. The ad campaign could boost city coffers by as much as $25,000, according to a report in the Phoenix Business Journal.

The ads, via bluemedia, carry the NBA's All-Star 2009 theme and images of 2009 All-Stars Kobe Bryant of the L.A. Lakers, Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic and Amar'e Stoudemire of the hometown's Phoenix Suns.
